Vegeria, a vegan treat in San Antonio

Who knew that my first restaurant feature on Mommy Dove would not only be vegan, but also nowhere near Arizona? My readers may not know - and my close friends might not guess - that I spent two years of my life as a very strict vegan. I'm not vegan anymore, but it definitely increased my love for vegetables and the range of foods that I'll eat. It also gave me an excellent repertoire of both veggie recipes and restaurants.

I also used to live in Texas. Yes, as a Texan vegan. If you happen to be a Texan veg person and are bemoaning your access to veggie-friendly food whilst surrounded by restaurants like Texas Land and Cattle, fear not! I found a gem in San Antonio: Vegeria, the city's only 100% vegan restaurant. Don't be turned off by the lack of cholesterol - you won't be disappointed.

Delicious vegan nachos at Vegeria
We went on a Saturday, when the restaurant was featuring their brunch menu. The restaurant is adorably sustainable and hippie-friendly; the walls are adorned with patrons' artwork, while the table caddies are repurposed Izze bottle holders.

We decided to start off with some Vegan Nachos - and so glad we did! Described as "a mountain of Tortillas chips, piled high with vegan queso, vegan taco filling, pico de gallo, and guacamole", my newly-vegan companion was surprised and thrilled by how tasty the vegan queso and taco filling were. "These make me think, 'I can do this'," she commented.
Vegan avocado sub, you're no match for me!

Next up was the Avocado Sub (fresh avocado, tomatoes, shredded carrots, onions, peppers, and red cabbage on a whole wheat roll) - which as you can see, we made haste in destroying. Then came dessert, and the choice was difficult to say the least. We finally settled on the Root Beer Cupcake. (The other available cupcake choices both included peanut, to which one of my dining buddies had an allergy. Allergic vegans...yikes!)

All in all, Vegeria was a wonderful dining experience and I hope San Antonio appreciates the wonderful addition to their repertoire of veggie-friendly eateries. I'll definitely be returning on my next trip to San Antonio. Check out their website and stop by if you're hitting the boardwalk.
